Multisport field: how to lay it out?

The multisport field is an intergenerational meeting place that encourages exchanges and helps forge new friendships. Its development is an initiative that benefits the community. However, certain rules must be respected to ensure that the pitch is suited to its intended use.

The choice of location

Team sports create a lively atmosphere that can be a nuisance to neighbors. A zone of at least 100 to 150 meters must be maintained in relation to surrounding residential areas. However, it is possible to consult with local residents. It is possible, for example, to limit the zone of good neighborliness, but to apply time restrictions to access to the site.

Dimensions of the multi-sports field

A standard multi-sports pitch is 20 m x 40 m. The space can be used for a variety of ball games. More modest dimensions of 18m x 30 m are also possible. The dimensions vary according to the sports you want to play (basketball, volleyball, handball, tennis, etc.).

Standards to comply with

Standard EN 15312 +A1 provides a scrupulous framework for the construction of multi-sports fields. The company in charge of the installation must issue a certificate of conformity and/or an inspection report before the site is opened to the general public. At least 1 annual inspection is also required. A test of the pitch's solidity is also required before commissioning, and every two years thereafter.

It is not necessary to apply for a building permit. However, a works application must be submitted, as stipulated in article L. 442-1 of the French urban planning code.

What kind of flooring for a multisports pitch?

A stable floor is essential. Several options are available to meet this criterion:

  • raw concrete or asphalt concrete floors: they are virtually maintenance-free. Regular sweeping and annual power washing are all that's required. This is the most economical option.
  • painted concrete floor: in most cases, the paint is green or beige. Blue and red are also applicable. Playing lines are easy to apply. Maintenance is also easy (annual sweeping and high-pressure washing).
  • resin-coated floor: more comfortable, as the resin absorbs jumps and running. However, to ensure the longevity of the material, users need to be made aware of this. Cleated shoes should be avoided. Cigarettes should also be banned. In terms of maintenance, it is essential to sweep the surface and resurface the resin after a lifespan of around 8-10 years.
  • Artificial turf: this has been a trendy floor for several decades now. On the one hand, the floor is aesthetically pleasing. On the other hand, it ensures a high level of comfort for users, with the exception of basketball players. Wheelchair access to the pitch is less easy than with concrete floors. Maintenance is quite demanding and the cost of changing the surface is quite high.

Optional equipment

Basically, the pitch should comprise two football/handball goals topped by basketball baskets. A third basket can also be placed against one of the goals, providing an additional surface for the basketball players. Mini goals can also be installed on the sides. This option is particularly interesting when players want to play two games at the same time. These matches are then played on a half-court.

Posts and nets are not compulsory, but multiply the possibilities in terms of activities. Volleyball with restricted access is highly recommended to avoid premature damage to the net.

The pitch can also be equipped with ball guards. These optional installations prevent balls from leaving the pitch, which often leads to their loss.

Choice of materials

Goals, benches, fences... are added to the ground. They need to be made of suitable materials to ensure a lasting investment.

Steel is known for its great strength. However, it is sensitive to corrosion. Paint generally peels off after 10 years, or even less for seaside installations.

Wood brings a certain charm to the pitch, but it's not strong enough to withstand the impact of balls. Not to mention the fact that this material is often subject to vandalism.

Stainless steel is an interesting material. Stainless steel 316 is preferable to stainless steel 304, as it is more resistant to corrosion and rust. However, regular maintenance is required to maintain this resistance, particularly in highly iodized environments (coastline). On the other hand, the cost of this material is very high.

Aluminum is the best material for a multi-sports field. Easy to maintain, it is corrosion-resistant. It can therefore be installed in all environments, including seaside sites.

Building a multisports pitch therefore requires in-depth study to ensure the longevity of the infrastructure, its suitability for the existing environment and the comfort of its users.
